How To Do Tummy Time With A Fussy Baby
Gentle Tummy Time Ideas for Babies Who Don't Like Being Put Down
If your baby isn't a fan of tummy time, you're definitely not alone! Some babies just don't feel happy being placed on the floor - it can feel strange and unfamiliar, especially when they're not close to their safe place (that's you!).
But tummy time is still really important for helping your baby build strength in their neck, shoulders, and upper body — and it doesn't always have to happen on the mat.
In fact, there are lots of gentle ways to help your little one enjoy tummy time with you.
👇 Watch the video below to see a few simple ways you can do tummy time on you rather than away from you.👇
Tummy Time On Your Legs
From here, they'll often lift their heads to look around, helping to strengthen those neck and back muscles. Make sure their airway stays clear, and you can add a gentle tummy massage or chat to them as they watch what's going on around them - maybe even an older sibling playing nearby!
This is a lovely way to give your baby some time off the back of their head while keeping them calm and close to you.
Tummy Time on Your Chest
This one's a favourite for newborns. Simply lie back slightly and rest your baby on your chest so they're tummy-down. They'll hear your heartbeat, smell your familiar scent, and feel your warmth — all things that help them feel safe and content.
As they start to lift their heads, they get to look at your face (their favourite thing in the world!) while still feeling completely secure.
It's one of the gentlest, most bonding ways to start tummy time in those early weeks.
Tummy Time on Your Shins
For slightly older babies, try resting them along your shins as you lie on your back. Support them carefully, and you'll find they can see you beautifully from this angle.
You can sing, talk, or even add a little gentle movement to make it fun. Babies often love this position because they're interacting with you — and you're not going anywhere!
When Your Baby Just Won't Be Put Down
If your baby is fussy and you're struggling to get them on the floor for tummy time, try one of these positions instead. You'll both enjoy it more, and your little one will still be building strength and coordination - all while feeling safe and close to you.
Sometimes it's just about adapting tummy time to what feels right for your baby.
